How does the calorie cycling calculator work?
First the tool estimates your maintenance calories, your total daily energy expenditure, using the Mifflin-St Jeor equation (1990) and your activity level, exactly like our TDEE calculator. It multiplies maintenance by seven to get your weekly maintenance energy, then subtracts your chosen weekly deficit to find the weekly calorie budget you should actually eat. Next it splits that weekly budget across seven days. High days are set above the daily average and low days below it, using a sensible swing of about 20 percent so the days feel meaningfully different without either extreme becoming unmanageable. The key rule is that the total across all seven days must equal your weekly budget, so when you add more high days, the low days have to drop to compensate. The math solves that automatically. If pushing the low days down would take them below the safe floor of 1200 calories for women or 1500 for men, the calculator refuses to cross that line, eases the high days back down, and rebalances the week so your total is still correct.

Worked example
Take an 80 kg, 180 cm, 30 year old man who trains moderately, giving a maintenance of about 2759 calories, or roughly 19,300 for the week. He wants a 3500 calorie weekly deficit, so his weekly budget is about 15,800 calories, an average near 2259 a day. He picks two high days. With a 20 percent swing, his high days come out near 2711 calories and his five low days near 2078 calories each. Check the math: two high days at 2711 is 5422, plus five low days at 2078 is 10,390, which totals 15,812, essentially his weekly budget. He eats noticeably more on his two hardest training days and still loses about a pound a week.
What should you eat on high and low days?

The difference between day types comes mostly from carbohydrate. High days carry more carbohydrate to fuel hard training and refill muscle glycogen, which can make your workouts feel stronger. Does calorie cycling burn more fat than a flat deficit?
