How calorie cycling is calculated

The method builds a weekly budget first, then splits it across seven days.

Weekly maintenance = daily maintenance × 7
Weekly budget = weekly maintenance − weekly deficit
High day ≈ daily average + 20% swing
Low days = (weekly budget − high-day total) ÷ number of low days

Maintenance comes from the Mifflin-St Jeor equation and your activity level, the same as the TDEE calculator. Multiply by seven, subtract your chosen weekly deficit, and you have the calories you should actually eat across the week. High days are set above the daily average and low days below it, using a sensible swing of about 20 percent. An 80 kg, 180 cm, 30-year-old man who trains moderately has a maintenance near 2759 calories, about 19,300 for the week. He wants a 3500 calorie weekly deficit, so his weekly budget is roughly 15,800 calories, an average near 2259 a day. He picks two high days. With a 20 percent swing his high days land near 2711 calories each and his five low days near 2078 calories each. Check it: two high days at 2711 is 5422, plus five low days at 2078 is 10,390, totalling 15,812, essentially his weekly budget. He eats noticeably more on his two hardest training days and still loses about a pound a week.
