The calculator uses the MET method, where MET stands for metabolic equivalent of task, a standard measure of exercise intensity from the 2011 Compendium of Physical Activities. Calories burned equal MET times your body weight in kilograms times the time in hours. Walking METs run from about 2.8 at a slow stroll to 5.0 at a fast 4 mph, so faster walking burns more per minute. Worked example
An 80 kg person walks briskly for 30 minutes. Brisk walking is about 4.3 MET, so the math is 4.3 times 80 times 0.5 hours, which is about 172 calories. Walk the same half hour at a fast 4 mph pace, worth 5.0 MET, and it rises to about 200 calories. The faster pace and any extra body weight both push the number up.

Limitations of this calculator
MET values are population averages, so your real burn varies with fitness, terrain, incline, wind, and walking economy, and step-based figures add stride-length error on top. The estimate covers the walk itself, not the small ongoing effect of being more active, and it is easy to double count if your activity level already includes daily walking. Use the number to compare sessions and set goals, not to eat calories back one for one.
Factors that change calories burned
- Body weight: heavier bodies burn more over the same distance, which is why weight is in the formula.
- Pace: faster walking has a higher MET, so it burns more per minute.
- Duration or distance: total energy scales directly with time spent walking.
