Why are maintenance calories different for women?
The most widely used equation for estimating metabolism, Mifflin-St Jeor, applies a different final constant for women and men: it subtracts 161 for women where it adds 5 for men. That is a gap of 166 calories at the basal level before any activity is added. The constant is not arbitrary. It reflects that, on average, women carry a higher proportion of body fat and less lean muscle than men of the same height and weight, and because lean tissue burns more energy at rest than fat does, the estimated basal metabolic rate comes out lower. Once that base is set, the activity multiplier works exactly the same way for everyone.
It is worth stressing the word average. Your own number comes from your own weight, height, age, and activity, not from a stereotype. A tall, muscular, very active woman can easily have a higher total daily energy expenditure than a shorter, sedentary man. If you know your body fat percentage, entering it switches the calculation to the Katch-McArdle equation, which is based directly on your lean mass and sidesteps the sex constant altogether, often giving a more personal estimate for women who lift or who know their composition well.
The formula in plain language
For women, basal metabolic rate equals 10 times your weight in kilograms, plus 6.25 times your height in centimetres, minus 5 times your age, minus 161. We then multiply that basal figure by an activity factor between 1.2 for sedentary and 1.9 for extra active to reach your total daily energy expenditure, the calories that keep your weight steady. Worked example
A 30 year old woman who weighs 65 kg, stands 165 cm, and exercises lightly has a basal rate of (10 x 65) plus (6.25 x 165) minus (5 x 30) minus 161, which is 650 plus 1031 minus 150 minus 161, about 1370 calories. Multiplying by the light activity factor of 1.375 gives a maintenance near 1884 calories a day. To lose about half a kilogram a week she would target roughly 1384, staying safely above the 1200 calorie floor.
How does the menstrual cycle change the numbers?
Energy needs rise modestly in the luteal phase, the roughly two weeks before a period, often by 100 to 300 calories a day, and water retention and appetite can shift too. These changes are small compared with your overall intake, so it is better to track weekly averages than to chase daily swings. Whatever your goal, do not push below 1200 calories a day: it makes getting enough protein, iron, and other nutrients very hard and does not improve long term results, which is why this tool and our calorie deficit calculator hold that floor.

Limitations of this calculator
The female constant reflects population averages, so your own metabolism can sit around 10 percent either side, and the activity multiplier is a broad estimate rather than a measurement. The tool does not account for pregnancy or breastfeeding, which raise energy needs substantially, nor for thyroid conditions, PCOS, or medications that change metabolism, all of which are best handled with a clinician. The luteal-phase adjustment is an average trend, not a personal figure. Use the estimate as a starting point and calibrate from your own weekly weight data.
